The 2018 Consolidated Appropriations Act included an amendment authorizing the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship. 在这项奖学金下, a Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer is eligible to receive a maximum Pell Grant for the offer year for which the determination of eligibility is made. 才有资格获得这项奖学金, 学生必须符合佩尔资格, have a Pell eligible EFC (as determined through completion of the FAFSA & 相关需求), and must be less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his/her parent’s or guardian’s death. 在随后的几年里, 该学生继续有资格获得奖学金, as long as the student has a Pell-eligible EFC and continues to be an eligible student.

For purposes of the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship, a public safety officer is:

  • As defined in section 1204 of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (42 U.S.C. 3796b); or
  • 消防警察, defined as an individual who is serving in accordance with State or local law as an officially recognized or designated member of a legally organized public safety agency and provides scene security or directs 交通 in response to any fire drill, 火灾报警, 或者其他火, 救援, 或者警察紧急事件, 或者在计划好的特别活动中.
